Bethel Creatives, no. 16: Katie Bracey

Interview conducted by Katie Brown in the The Crossings’s series on creativity and diversity within Bethel University’s student body. The heart behind this series is to explore creativity in a broader sense and to be encouraged and inspired by the creatives on our campus and the things that they are doing.

Katie (Apollo) Bracey is a senior studying Liberal Arts with a focus in Theater, Music, and Geography at Bethel. She likes to spend most of her time in the basement of Everest-Rohrer or at Sufficient Grounds. She also likes to play and make up songs on the piano, hang out with her best friends, sing, dance, participate in theater activities, and draw.

How would you define creativity?

Creativity is how one represents themselves in a different way than most people would. For me, it’s using your brain to do things that are outside the box. It’s also anything you find comforting. When you aren’t mentally doing well, you can use creativity as an outlet to escape from reality for a certain amount of time.

How do you express your creativity?

For me, I would say drawing and playing the piano. Every drawing I’ve done takes a lot of time, energy, and effort, but in the end, it’s something that I create that makes me very proud of what I do as well as writing songs on the piano that helps me whenever I’m in a rough spot.

At what age did you discover your outlet?

I would say when I turned 21. I realized this was an outlet for me and that it helps me.

Do you have a routine? If so, what is it?

I wake up, go to my classes, and I use whatever time I have to draw or play the piano as well as do my homework.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in the shows I hyper fixate on. One of them, currently is “The Owl House” and “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.” My art style is representative of “The Owl House.” I enjoy the art style. I also find inspiration through my friends as well. I have friends that inspire me greatly often and motivate me.

How do you balance your workload with being creative?

I typically try to keep an even balance between the two, but sometimes it doesn’t go as planned. I try to get my homework done when I have enough time.

Is there a way that you specifically explore your creativity on campus?

I explore my creativity through acting. I am currently playing Margot Frank, the older sister of Anne Frank in the play “The Diary of Anne Frank.” I like to act as different characters and present myself in a fun way for others to see and in a respectful way.

Do you have any words of wisdom you’d like to give our readers?

Live your life the way you want to and enjoy life while you have it because you never know when it may end. Keep your head up and don’t let other people’s thoughts and opinions influence your own because you are your own person. Be your own person and don’t be afraid to stand out in the crowd and be bold. Be yourself and love who you’ve become. Never forget to look back every now and again even as the past may be painful, it’s important that it teaches us to acknowledge how far you’ve come and how far you will go.
